Superfluidity of polaritons in semiconductor microcavities

Superfluidity, the ability of a quantum fluid to flow without friction, is one of the most spectacular phenomena occurring in degenerate gases of interacting bosons. Since its first discovery in liquid Helium, superfluidity has been observed in quite different systems, with recent experiments in ultracold trapped atoms being focused on establishing the subtle links between superfluidity and Bose-Einstein condensation. In solid state systems, polaritons in semiconductor microcavities (...)

Reconstruction of non-classical cavity field states with snapshots of their decoherence

The “Cavity Quantum-Electrodynamics team” at LKB has been able to trap light in a « photon box » (a microwave cavity) for a time long enough to fully determine its quantum state and observe its evolution . This state is a mathematical object, which allows physicists to predict the statistics of all possible measurements performed on the trapped photons. It can in general be represented by a map of values in a “phase plane” which looks as a three dimension (...)

Shaping the void

Quantum vacuum may be devoid of matter but its shape is still important. The strength of the Casimir force caused by quantum fluctuations in the space between surfaces critically depends on their nano-scale shape. As recently published in Physical Review Letters, the geometrical approximation which is widely used to calculate the shape influence completely fails in this situation. Two reflecting plates in quantum vacuum attract each other. This startling vacuum force is called the Casimir (...)

New hints on the Pioneer anomaly

The trajectory of Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 probes in the outer solar system was found not to fit the awaited one. This unexpected discovery has been published a decade ago by a team working at JPL, a NASA lab. A collaboration of french physicists working at ONERA, Géosciences Azur and Laboratoire Kastler Brossel have added new hints to this file by producing a new detailed analysis of the JPL data. Launched in 1972 and 1973, the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes have been the first visitors of (...)
