Since the foundation of the cold atom group by Claude Cohen-Tannoudji in 1984, this domain of research has undergone a spectacular expansion. Trapped and laser cooled atoms have become a tool for several teams of the laboratory. The applications of cold atoms range from metrology and high precision measurement, to the simulation of condensed matter systems with research devoted to bosonic and fermionic atomic assemblies.
